“AN EXCEPTIONAL PIECE OF WORK AND ONE OF THE MOST EXHILARATING MOMENTS I’VE EXPERIENCED IN A THEATER IN RECENT MEMORY.”
– New York Magazine
Following a wildly successful Broadway run that ended in January 2025, Stereophonic goes on tour around North America and hits London’s West End. The US tour will keep the award-winning production team, including playwright David Adjmi and director Daniel Aukin, and will be joined by Sonia Friedman Productions and Seaview to adapt the stage design on the fly for the various venues and stage sizes during the run.
Stereophonic, a multi-Tony-Award-winning show!
THEATRICAL SOLID GOLD. ALL THE TINY DETAILS, WILD RHYTHMS, AND CLEVER HOOKS ADD UP TO A BRAVE, BREATHTAKING WORK.
– Variety
A play in one room, written by David Adjmi, the show is about a 1970s rock band that set out to record an album in their studio space over the course of one year and are on the cusp of making it BIG! The audience view is directly into this cut away recording studio, with the band making their final touches on their album. Not even remotely resembling Fleetwood Mac, this British-American band is made up of the highly egotistical and control-freak guitarist, Peter and his long-term girlfriend, the tamborine playing and singer, Diana, along with Reg the bassist, who is married to the keyboardist and singer Holly, and finally, the drummer Simon.
The set for Stereophonic, which recreates a 1970s recording studio, is immaculate. Walking into the Golden, I wasn’t sure what decade the play took place in, but I understood the moment I saw that set. The carpet, the pillows, the big beautiful Cadac G Type console, the sheer brownness of the whole thing, it was all correct.
Yup, not even remotely resembling Fleetwood Mac at all, so much so that the play was sued in October 2024 for its resemblance to the book, Making Rumours: The Inside Story of the Classic Fleetwood Mac Album by Ken Caillat and Steven Stiefel. The songs for the show, which the band plays, are all original, written by Will Butler, formerly of Arcade Fire, and the aesthetic is pure 1970s rock. And like any band of that era, given an extraordinary amount of time together, with a massive budget, they just can’t help but fight over it… or, you know, f*** each other. The ups, the downs, the fights, the romances—it all plays out on stage, exactly how you’d imagine a 70s rock band behaving.
And boy, that music. The music in Stereophonic is astonishing. If the band’s album were available to purchase, I would have bought it on the spot.
A live cast recording of the music is available as of May 2024, so do get that if you love the show!
Critics called it “theatrical solid gold” and a “must-see American classic” for its incredibly detailed storytelling and absolutely fantastic music. The show topped the Best Theater of 2023 lists in The New York Times, Washington Post, and more, and received a truly staggering 13 Tony nominations, the most for any play in Broadway history. Eventually, Steriophonic took home five Tonys’ for Best Play, and Best Direction of a Play, Best Sound Design of a Play, and Best Scenic Design of a Play, while Will Bril got Best Featured Actor in a Play, Eli Gelb and Tom Pecinka also received nominations for this award. The show also received the Drama Desk Award, the Drama League Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play of the 2023/2024 season.
Hollywood Pantages Theatre, Los Angeles, CA
A historic landmark, and an architectural Art-deco gem of a building located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA. The theater first opened back in 1930, was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1978, and entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Purpose built for theater by Alexander Pantages, the Art-deco style continues from the outside into the double height, poly-chromatic fan vault lobby, and huge bronze chandelier.
The theater has also been a filming location for blockbuster films like The Jazz Singer in 1980 and, more recently, The Bodyguard and Batman Forever. It has also hosted concerts by artists like Prince, Shakira, and Alice Cooper. During Hollywood’s golden age in the 50s and 60s, the Hollywood Pantages hosted the Academy Awards before pivoting to become a purely theater production venue in 1977 and is now the main Broadway theater venue in Los Angeles, hosting shows like Wicked, Hamilton, and The Lion King. After a ten million dollar renovation in 2000, the theater now seats just shy of 3000 guests across its Orchestra and Mezzanine sections.
