“In ‘Shucked,’ a Glut of Gleeful Puns and ‘Cornography’” – The New York Times
Shucked
All the way from the fictional Cob County, the news is in, and the local corn crop is about to fail and collapse the town… Particularly bad news for local lovers Maizy and Beau, as it devastates their plans to get hitched. So, setting out to save the town, her new marriage, and, most importantly, the corn, Maizy travels to far off Tampa in search of the elusive “corn doctor,” Gordy, the only man who can save the harvest and get Maizy home to her big cob! Popping with country music numbers “Independently Owned” and “Somebody Will,” from Grammy-winning songwriters Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, and exploding with corn-centric puns, this “knee-slapping comedy” of a musical is “a harvest of corny innuendo” that will entertain the whole family all night long.
The show runs for approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, including an intermission. It contains adult themes, moments of adult language, and a harvest of corny innuendo but is suitable for audiences over the age of 10, with children under 5 not admitted.

Cast and Creative
“What do you get when you pair a semi-neurotic, New York comedy writer with two music superstars from Nashville? A hilarious and audacious farm-to-fable musical about the one thing Americans everywhere can’t get enough of: corn.” – Broadway World
With the book written by Tony Award winner Robert Horn (Tootsie and 13: The Musical) and musical score by Grammy-winning Nashville songwriters Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally. Shucked is directed by Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien (Hairspray), and the tour features a corn-ucopia of a-maize-ing talent like Miki Abraham, who plays Lulu, reprising his role from the Broadway run. Our all-natural, corn-fed heroine, Danielle Wade, portraying Maizy, has previously starred as Cady in Mean Girls and Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Quinn VanAntwerp, who also jumps back into the role of Gordy, whom he portrayed on Broadway, and finally, Jake Odmark, who plays Beau, has credits in both Pretty Woman and Kinky Boots.
Review: SHUCKED at Broadway in Tucson
SHUCKED is a new musical that on the surface appears to be about corn. But there is so much more to the story. Broadway in Tucson brings SHUCKED to the table this August, and it is one of the best times I have ever had at the theater. SHUCKED is so funny and entertaining that my wife and I will be returning to see it again this weekend. The premise is simple: the corn in a small town called Cobb County is going bad. Maizy (whose name appears to be a punny reference to corn) goes to Tampa to find a “corn doctor,” who is not what he seems.
If you like puns, especially corn-related ones, you will find them in SHUCKED! This is a laugh-a-minute (perhaps every 30 seconds!) comedic extravaganza that will leave you hungry for more. I went in completely cold, knowing nothing about the play except that it is corn-centric. But SHUCKED is also a fable and a sweetly optimistic look at shifting cultural norms. Just like shucking corn, watching SHUCKED will unwrap layers of emotional depth as the play progresses. Directed by Jack O’Brien, SHUCKED is deliciously salty popcorn entertainment. The name of the game is fun. O’Brien’s staging guarantees that audiences will leave smiling and not be bored for one second. Even someone like myself who enjoys darker material is likely to enjoy the cheesy jokes, and that’s impressive.
SHUCKED surprised me. It’s unapologetically cheesy, so know that going in. But it will melt your heart like a pad of butter on a freshly plucked ear of corn. Run down to Centennial Hall before it’s gone! Tickets are available at broadwayintucson.com.
