Synopsis
Monty Python’s Spamalot tells the legendary story of King Arthur’s mission to find the Holy Grail. Inspired by the classic comedy movie (Monty Python and the Holy Grail), this musical also has a fresh take on the traditional versions of the legend. Instead, the show features shenanigans including a line of beautiful dancing girls, flying cows, flatulent Frenchmen, and killer rabbits. Outside, there is plague with a fifty percent chance of epidemic disease and famine. Throughout the musical, Arthur travels with his servant Patsy, and recruits several knights to join the quest. The knights include Sir Bedevere, Sir Robin, Sir Lancelot, and Sir Galahad. As well as the killer rabbits and farting Frenchman, they also meet quirky characters like Lady of the Lake, Prince Herbert, Tim the Enchanter, Not Dead Fred, the Black Knight, as well as the Knights who say Ni.
Creative Team
Monty Python’s Spamalot features a book and lyrics by Eric Idle and music by John Du Prez and Eric Idle. The creative team includes the talented Josh Rhodes as director and choreographer, John Bell as music supervisor and music director, Paul Tate dePoo III as scenic and projection designer, Jen Caprio as costume designer, Cory Pattak as lighting designer, Kai Harada and Haley Parcher as sound designers, as well as Tom Watson as wig designer.
The star-studded cast includes James Monroe Iglehart as King Arthur, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer as the Lady of the Lake, Christopher Fitzgerald as Patsy, Ethan Slater as the Historian/Prince Herbert, Michael Urie as Sir Robin, Nik Walker as Sir Galahad, as well as Jimmy Smagula as Sir Bedevere.
History and Awards
Monty Python’s Spamalot draws inspiration from Monty Python’s 1975 movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Many of the jokes, characters, and scenes are taken directly from the movie. The musical also pulls from Monty Python’s sketch comedy, Arthurian legend, as well as Broadway musical parodies. If you didn’t already know, Monty Python is a legendary British comedy group. Formed in the 60s, group members included: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin.
Monty Python’s Spamalot opened its curtains in Chicago in December 2004. The show officially opened on Broadway in March 2005. The musical was met with critical acclaim, snagging 14 Tony Award nominations and winning three categories (Best Musical, Best Featured Actress (Sara Ramirez), and Best Direction (Mike Nichols)). What’s more, the original cast album took home the Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album in 2006, meanwhile the touring production earned a Boston Elliot Norton Award for Outstanding Visiting Production. But wait, there’s more… the 2023 Kennedy Center revival earned a number of 2024 Helen Hayes Award nominations including Outstanding Production – Musical, Outstanding Director (Josh Rhodes), Choreography, Musical Direction (John Bell), Ensemble, and Supporting Performers (Michael Urie, Rob McClure, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer). The 2023 Broadway revival took home further nominations in 2024 like a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Drama Desk Award, Drama League Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award.
