Les Miserables at Hollywood Pantages Theatre

Les Miserables at Hollywood Pantages Theatre

“This one is a solid piece of theatrical architecture, built to survive every critical arrow shot through its heart.” – Variety

And so has it been, and so it is written on the doorway to paradise, that there are few theatrical productions out there that can hold the candle to this one. Empty chairs at empty tables simply do not exist in the audience, or have existed since this theatrical gem hit stages around the world. As soon as the first note soars through the auditorium it is like a castle on a cloud, and everyone is wishing for one day more when the last note dies down and the curtain falls. The biggest question though is, do you hear the people sing? It is not the song of angry men, but rather the jubilation of the news of one of the world’s greatest musicals coming to town!

Yes, it has been revived with marvellous innovation; yes, it still boasts towering passion and that thrilling operatic intensity; yes, it still delivers a gut-punch second to none; yes it is still the type of musical you need to allow to totally overwhelm you; yes, it is still jaw-dropping, goosebum-inducing, and hair-raising all at once; yes, it is a total must-see; and yes, Los Angeles, Les Misérables is coming to the Hollywood Pantages Theatre this season!

SYNOPSIS

Based on Victor Hugo’s classic 1862 novel of the same name, Les Misérables follows the tale of a French peasant, Jean Valjean, in his quest for redemption. After being released from prison after 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed a starving child, he is forced to commit yet another crime, but due to mercy being shown to him, Valjean chooses to break his parole and start anew – in disguise. He becomes a successful businessman, even though he is still being pursued by a police inspector, and decides to adopt an orphaned child after her mother, a previous employee of Valjean, passed away.

As the child, Cosette, grows up, she falls in love with Marius, a young man swept into a revolution brought about by a young group of idealists attempting to overthrow the government, striving for a better life for all.

Anyone who has experienced this epic tale before will agree: Les Misérables just hits differently. It is a gorgeously multilayered musical where everything operates on a gut-punching visceral level – captivating, passionate, most exquisite, and is imbued with a gravitas and intensity you won’t easily find elsewhere.

“With a cast that never misses a note, the West End’s longest running musical proves a haunting and thrilling inspiration.” – The Guardian

HISTORY AND LEGACY

Les Misérables, inspired by the 1862 Victor Hugo novel of the same name, was initially written as a concept album, with music by Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel. Upon receiving a copy of the album in 1983, Cameron Mackintosh agreed to develop Les Misérables into a full length sung-through musical in English. Les Misérables opened in October 1985 at the Barbican Centre in London, before transferring to the West End. Here, Les Misérables became the longest-running musical in the West End, and since its opening on Broadway in 1987, gained the title of sixth longest-running Broadway show in history.

To date, Les Misérables has been the recipient of no less than a Laurence Olivier Award, eight Tony Awards, five Drama Desk Awards, a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, two Dora Awards, a Green Room Award, and five Helpmann Awards. ‘Les Misérables’ has been rated as Britain’s Number One Essential Musical, and with Tom Hooper’s 2012 film adaptation, racked up even more awards.
