Set in the artistic period during the end of the 19th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily based on French history. The play takes places and is all about the happenings of a real nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, titled the Moulin Rouge, where the can-can dance was born. By the late 19th century, Moulin Rouge became well-known for its French Cabaret style – ecstatic, free-spirited, and a somewhat crazy lifestyle. This Parisian entertainment venue that the show was based on also affected the production's preparation, with Baz Luhrmann and the musical's creative team stating that they did take pieces of the actual Bohemian period, and it can undoubtedly be viewed in the production. The set design, costumes, classical renditions, and choreography (which features a lot of can-can dance) all clearly pay homage to to the original Moulin Rouge.
It is in this time of history leading up to the 1900s and smack in the middle of the French La Belle Époque, a time thought to be the pinnacle of beauty and spreading artistry, where the fictional affair of two lovers take place. Christian, an American writer who journeys to France aiming for a successful calling, meets Satine, the greatest entertainer of the Moulin Rouge. The couple, despite both external and internal challenges, fall deeply in love and settle for a secret affair with each other due to their uncontrollable feelings.
Depending on perspective, the duration of La Belle Époque was denounced by many not as a time period of advancement or development. Some people believe that this decade were all about rising tension beneath the surface. Moulin Rouge! The Musical, however, chose to present the time period in a more favorable perspective by highlighting the hopeful Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as seen through Christian and Satine’s evolving love story throughout the play.
In this decade, theatre fans have the opportunity to relive the entertainment most likely also enjoyed by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be performing at an equally colorful and incredible venue, Hollywood Pantages Theatre. With interior decor just as beautiful as the set that it is staging, Hollywood Pantages Theatre is the ideal fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited production on Friday 14th November 2025.
