Set in the artistic period during the turn of the 20th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily inspired by French history. The play can be found in and is focused on retelling the events of an actual nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, titled the Moulin Rouge, where the can-can dance was born. By the turn of the 20th century, Moulin Rouge became famous for its French Cabaret elegance – ecstatic, full of spirit, and pure party entertainment. This Parisian nightclub that the staging was based on also impacted the production, with Baz Luhrmann and the show's creative team mentioning that they did take pieces of the late 1900s history, and it can decisively be seen in the performance. The set design, clothing, music score, and choreography (which showcases a lot of can-can dance) all obviously show reverence and respect to the original Moulin Rouge.
It is in this period of history leading up to the 1900s and smack in the middle of France's La Belle Époque, a duration pointed to as the height of beauty and spreading artistry, where the romantic story of two lovers finally happens. Christian, an American writer who moves to France aiming for a successful passion, meets Satine, the greatest performer of the Moulin Rouge. The pair, despite the imminent danger of their relationship, fall crazily in love and are forced into a hidden relationship with each other caused by their uncontrollable feelings.
Contrary to other accounts, the time of La Belle Époque was denounced by historians not as a period of cultural and artistic development. Many believe that this time period were all about the elite's triumph over the poor. the Broadway musical, however, chose to present the era in a more positive light by focusing on the hopeful Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as seen through Christian and Satine’s fight for love throughout the play.
