Les Miserables at Hollywood Pantages Theatre

More than 40 years ago, a star show was born when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg wrote the original play screenplay for Les Misérables (initially in the French language). Created from Victor Hugo’s 1862 book of the same title, Les Mis was transformed into a musical performed as a fully sung-through show, which was monumental in that era.

After a very short run in France, there was obviously overwhelming support to create a more accessible version, and once Cameron Macikintosh heard the score, he instantly fell in love and decided to produce an English version while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who invented the new lyrics. The English production of the musical initially performed with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but because of its impressive success and larger audience with the English version, the musical quickly moved to West End’s Palace Theatre in due time, a significantly more premier location, and remained there for 19 years. The West End play then moved once again to another venue, the Queen’s Theatre (which was eventually refurbished and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and continues to run up until present day. Counting all its tours since its first showing four decades ago, Les Misérables is as it happens, the longest-running musical so far in this generation.

With 37 years in London on its own and not even listing its productions in foreign countries, including its acclaimed Broadway runs, it is undeniable that Les Mis endures and is smashing in the perspective of the show's attendees.
