Hadestown is Anaïs Mitchell’s contemporary mythology adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice’s love story. After drawing up the original scores and scripts in 2010, she turned to acclaimed stage director Rachel Chavkin for assistance in 2012. Together, the pair fine-tuned the play for public, off-Broadway showings that began in 2016. Hadestown would graduate from its unassuming origins to a sought-after spot on Broadway and other well-known stages in London and Canada, making it a international sensation.
Enter the Underworld, where Hades runs a productive but stringent factory called Hadestown. The below-ground workers perform their endless duties daily in hopes they’ll eventually earn their autonomy. Meanwhile, Orpheus and Eurydice enjoy a blossoming romance above ground, despite the challenges of winter’s famine.
Once Hades forces his wife Persephone to return to Hadestown, an early winter intensifies above-ground hungers. Eurydice, affected by insatiable yearnings and influenced by the alluring suggestions of the Fates, obsesses over the safety Hadestown promises. She eventually travels to the underground industrial complex and signs a contract in exchange for stability.
Her contract entangles her, and it’s up to Orpheus to rescue his bride-to-be. But an embittered Hades, pressured by his disquieted workforce, stands firm in the contractual agreement. Can Orpheus free his one true love with Persephone’s help? Or will Hades bind Eurydice to do his bidding for eternity?
In 2019, the musical won 14 nominations and eight awards at the 73rd Tony Awards. Hadestown would also claim a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater. Its lofty achievements and wall-to-wall audiences demonstrate the play’s connection with a contemporary era while combining classical elements from the past.
