Hadestown is Anaïs Mitchell’s modern mythology adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice’s love story. After drafting the original scores and scripts in 2010, she turned to decorated stage director Rachel Chavkin for assistance in 2012. Together, the duo polished the play for public, off-Broadway showings that began in 2016. Hadestown would progress from its modest beginnings to a coveted place on Broadway and other well-known stages in London and Canada, making it a international sensation.

Welcome to the Underworld, where Hades runs a productive but stringent factory called Hadestown. The exhausted workers perform their sisyphean duties daily in hopes they’ll eventually earn their independence. Meanwhile, Orpheus and Eurydice delight in a growing love above ground, despite the trials of winter’s famine.

Once Hades forces his wife Persephone to return to Hadestown, an early winter sharpens above-ground famishment. Eurydice, affected by unmet needs and influenced by the enticing promises of the Fates, longs for the safety Hadestown promises. She eventually finds herself in the underground industrial complex and signs a contract in exchange for guaranteed food.

Her contract entraps her, and it’s up to Orpheus to rescue his bride-to-be. But an unswaying Hades, pressured by his discontented workforce, stands firm in the contractual agreement. Can Orpheus free his one true love with Persephone’s help? Or will Hades bind Eurydice to do his bidding for eternity?

In 2019, the musical won 14 nominations and eight awards at the 73rd Tony Awards. Hadestown would also claim a 2020 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater. Its lofty achievements and sold-out audiences demonstrate the play’s kinship with a contemporary era while combining classical elements from the past.
