SYNOPSIS

After a beautiful enchantress, masked as old beggar woman, is denied shelter for a cold night at a vain prince’s castle based purely on her appearance, she curses the prince to live out his days as a horrendous beast, unless the curse is broken by true love before the last petal of the rose she gave him, falls. Along with him, the prince’s entire household is transformed into household items, with their fate resting on the prince’s ability to find true love.

In a small provincial town, the dreamy, bookish beauty Belle attracts the attention of the town’s most eligible bachelor, hunter, and hero. Belle manages to avoid his advances at first. Belle’s father Maurice is attacked by a pack of wolves on his travels to a fair, and looks for shelter in the Beast’s castle. The Beast, annoyed by Maurice’s presence, locks him in a dungeon. Upon finding out that Maurice has been captured, Belle sets out to the Beast’s castle where she offers herself in return for Maurice’s freedom.

The Beast’s household sees Belle’s presence as an opportunity to break the curse, and goes out of their way to make Belle’s stay as pleasant as possible. The question is, will they be successful in getting their master to drop his fierce facade and fall in love with Belle? Will Belle feel the same? What will happen when Maurice tells the townfolk, including the pompous Gaston, that Belle, the woman he wants to marry purely because of her beauty, is held captive by the Beast?

The tale of Belle and her Beast has been enchanting the world for nearly three centuries, and will for many centuries to come.

HISTORY & LEGACY

Beauty and the Beast really is a tale as old as time.

Based on Jeanne-Marie Leprince Beaumont’s 1740 tale, and in turn on the Walt Disney Animation Studios 1991 film, Beauty and the Beast premiered on Broadway in 1994 at the Palace Theatre. In 1999 the production transferred to the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, where it closed in 2007 after 5,461 performances.

Beauty and the Beast is Broadway’s eleventh-longest running production. To date, Beauty and the Beast has been performed in up to 37 countries in 17 languages. It is Disney Theatrical Group’s very first stage adaptation, and one of the most successful musicals in history. Beauty and the Beast is credited with changing Broadway entirely, becoming the very first legitimate family show, bringing an entire new generation to the theatre.

To date, Beauty and the Beast has received a Tony Award and a Laurence Olivier Award, along with a large number of award nominations.
