S.E. Hinton's iconic novel 'The Outsiders' was a literary staple in every single middle and high school English class|has been one of those books everybody need to read at least once in their lives since it was first released}, and even though some eyebrows were raised at the cutting-edge content touching on brutality, addiction, depression, and socio-economic struggles, we were instantly captivated by the timeless tale of Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, Sodapop Curtis, Cherry Valance and the others.
The question is, however, will the musical be able to fill the shoes of the iconic novel?
And the answer is a resounding yes! Since its premiere in 2023 at the La Jolla Playhouse and moving to Broadway's Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in 2024, 'The Outsiders' had its hands on the hearts of every single audience member, winning them over once more. Now, The Outsiders North American Tour brings this Tony Award-winning sensation to Los Angeles. The creative mixture of story, sound, lights, and movement, topped by music that is quickly becoming the new song for misfits, guaranteed to walk boldly in the footsteps of the literary legacy.
Add a 60s-sounding score tinged with folk influences and a dash of pop-country masterfully crafted by Jamestown Revival's Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance alongside Justin Levine, delivered in the breathtaking voices of a stellar cast peppered with newcomers, a bountiful serving of powerful visual vignettes, extraordinary choreography by Rick and Jeff Kuperman, a gritty, yet effective warehouse-like set, and a spirited, visceral spin on the violence under the direction of Tony winner Danya Taymor, and top it with theatricality that will blow even the most ardent naysayer's mind, and you have a production that is taking a massive swing at becoming Broadway's hottest new thing.
'The Outsiders' ticks all the boxes and then some: the excitement of both novelty and familiarity boiling over into a first-rate theatrical production, the pangs and passions of being young and the hardships of have-nots in a world of have-its, questions about the vulnerability of teenage boys to violence and harm, the difficulties of being an outsider, and the struggles of having a lot of heart and remaining truthful in an unkind world, that moment you grasp that you're actually witnessing one of the world's best, latest productions and the realization that every single award that came in the direction of 'The Outsiders' was well deserved - including four Tony Awards (including Best Musical), an Outer Critics Circle Award, two Drama Desk Awards, a Theatre World Award, and a Chita Rivera Award.
There is no doubt: 'The Outsiders' is busy making its small town dreams come true - to become the biggest dream of many!
