Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Hollywood Pantages Theatre

In 2019, first showing at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge was modified into the well-loved live performance in Broadway. Originally written and directed by Baz Luhrmann, it was brought to the stage by famous cast members including Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who were the original cast members of Christian and Satine respectively, and the creatives including director Alex Timbers and music numbers and orchestrations by Justine Levine, behind the curtain.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a show filled with young passion, love, and loss that shows us all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the end of the 1800s and at the peak of Bohemianism, during the period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, searches for his big career break. He hopes to start a successful career as a writer and travels to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new friends, Lautrec and Santiago, who tell him to create a musical that they can put on. It is in the underworld of Moulin Rouge where he meets Satine, the performer of the the renowned entertainment venue that he wishes to get to know more. Their forbidden romance however encounters a haughty competitor in the persona of the rich and powerful Duke of Monroth, who is pledged Satine by the nightclub’s promoter Harold Zidler, in exchange for a large financial expenditure to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and improve the nightclub's standing. So starts Christian and Satine’s struggle for love on the Broadway stage.

Essentially a classical tale that remains a sure favorite up to today, the musical is also a combination of both old and new music, putting together arrangements not just from the original film adaptation, but also song mash-ups and medleys from new songs that were injected into the narrative of the play.
