Set largely throughout the period preceding and during the widespread rebellion in 1832 in Paris, France, the musical, Les Misérables is the story of Jean Valjean, a citizen of Paris who was sentenced for close to 20 years as a consequence of stealing a loaf of bread for his nephew. After his time on the chain gang, he runs away and searches for a second chance to live his life; Valjean then takes on a new name as Monsieur Madeleine, while still constantly being pursued by his nemesis, Javert, an officer who has known Valjean since his time in the chain gang and determined to catch and bring Jean Valjean back to prison.
Happening over a span of almost two decades consisting of its entire production, Jean Valjean happens to be entangled by accidental means with a few key people in every part of Les Mis – Fantine is one of Jean Valjean's factory employees who mothers an illegitimate child; Cosette is the foster baby of Jean Valjean, who by no surprise Fantine’s infant; Marius, a student part of the insurgency and the destined love match of Cosette. Other roles seen in the musical consist of the Thénardiers, abusive proprietors who think only of themselves and are engrossed with their own personal gain; Eponine, their child, who hides her true feelings for Marius; and comrades of the government opposition specifically Gavroche, a naive but cunning child, and the opposition’s charismatic leader, Enjolras.
This motley group of characters who are part of one struggle and their unique hardships are presented beautifully on stage, not just with the musical's 19th century French-based clothing and set creations, but most especially with Les Mis being sung-through fully from start to finish. With iconic numbers including “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” as anthems of its astounding score, the musical is able to communicate the underlying motives hiding behind every character that plays out beautifully in the theater.
