Best known for playing himself in the sitcom Seinfeld, which he created and wrote with Larry David, American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, producer, and director Jerry Seinfeld began his career in the late 1970s. After performing stand-up at various local open mics, he appeared in a Rodney Dangerfield HBO special in 1976, which was followed by a small recurring role on the sitcom Benson in 1980. After a successful appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1981, Seinfeld appeared on several talk shows throughout the 1980s, including Late Night with David Letterman. He featured in his first ever one-hour HBO comedy special, Stand-Up Confidential, in 1987. In 1988, the sitcom Seinfeld began (originally known as The Seinfeld Chronicles), and by season four it was most popular and successful sitcom on American television. After Seinfeld ended in 1998, he threw himself into stand-up comedy and in 2005, he was named by Comedy Central as the "12th Greatest Stand-up Comedian of All Time." He is the creator and host of the web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.
