In Beetlejuice, the main character, Betelgeuse, is a bio-exorcist demon who is enamored with returning to the world of the living. Once Betelgeuse learns that Barbara and Adam Maitland have fallen through the floor of their beloved home, he sees a chance to obtain what he wants. The recently departed will be allowed to leave if they can convince a living person to say their name three times. His clearly laid strategy quickly falls through after he learns that one of the new housemates is the sassy and shrewd Lydia.
She puts Betelgeuse through tests that he could never have expected and wins over the hearts of the Maitlands in the process. Madness ensues, as this outlandish bunch of misfits attempts to find joy and freedom together, whether dead or alive.
